Thomas Jefferson correspondence, 1806-1826.

This collection consists of a thank-you card, a dinner invitation, and a note from Thomas Jefferson. The card, dated Washington, Feb. 26, 1806, is addressed to James Taylor of Cincinnati who sent Jefferson various plants. The printed invitation, dated Nov. 19, 1807, requests Mr. Taylor of Kentucky to dine with Jefferson on the 23rd. The note from Jefferson, dated Monticello, Feb. 18, 1826, to Mr. Bonnycastle, indicates that he has enclosed a letter from Mr. Canning.

James Taylor, the son of Col. James Taylor, was born on Apr. 19, 1769 in Caroline County, Virginia. He was educated at Rappahannock Academy. In 1788 Taylor was commissioned as surveyor of Caroline County and was made deputy sheriff.
